The School of Humanities and Social Science (SHSS) at HKUST stands out among its peers with a strong record of multidisciplinary graduate training and placement, fostering global best practices in undergraduate teaching, engagement of students in faculty research, and international impact of faculty scholarship.

The Center for Language Education (CLE) of SHSS is committed to becoming an international leader in language education through innovative program design, application of technology, and scholarship of teaching and learning. We teach required courses in English and Chinese to over 6,000 UG and PG students each semester, as well as elective courses.

The School is looking for an experienced individual to fill the position of Associate/Assistant IT Manager. Reporting to the CLE Center Manager, the appointee will ensure an efficient IT administration of the School and the Center including IT strategy management, development and implementation, particularly to take on an application and server migration project.

Major duties of the appointee include:

  • Assisting the School and the CLE Center Manager to oversee the daily operations and supervise the IT team;
  • Developing and implementing IT strategies aligned with the School’s goals and university-wide initiatives;
  • Overseeing IT infrastructure, systems, and devices, including on-premises and cloud server management;
  • Implementing robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard IT systems and sensitive data;
  • Identifying and integrating cutting-edge educational technologies to enhance language education and improve operational efficiency;
  • Formulating IT policies, documentation, and procedures, ensuring compliance with university guidelines and industry standards;
  • Managing vendor relationships, overseeing procurement processes, and negotiating IT service contracts;
  • Managing IT projects, ensuring timely delivery, budget adherence, and high-quality outcomes;
  • Designing and delivering training programs to enhance IT team skills and improve end-user digital literacy;
  • Maintaining close communication and collaboration with internal units, particularly with the ITSC and ISO; and
  • Any other duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field, with at least 10 years of relevant post-qualification work experience in educational technologies and learning management systems and content management systems, particularly Drupal; as well as budget management and resource allocation.
  • Proven expertise in IT infrastructure, networking, and security, including Linux and Windows servers, VMware and Hyper-V virtualization, MS SQL and MySQL databases, and enterprise storage and network technologies (e.g., firewall, router, network switch, load balancing) is required.
  • The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate strong project management skills and success in planning and executing complex IT projects, including server and application migrations, system upgrades, and cloud transitions.
  • Knowledge of IT service management frameworks (e.g., ITIL) is needed with excellent analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, and a customer-oriented mindset with strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Candidates with less experience may be considered for the Assistant IT Manager position. (Duration: 2 years, renewable)
